2 Peter 2:2 Mistranslation to “Sensuality”

1But false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2Many will follow their indecent behavior, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
– 2 Peter 2:1-3 (NASB)

Because of the mistranslation of verse 2 in many versions of the Bible, gay churches are excluded. For example, one translation of the beginning of verse 2 has, “And many will follow their sensuality…” But the translation has been twisted according to the religiosity of scholars and must be seen clearly for what Peter meant. Gay churches exist because of exclusion as opposed to Jesus’ love.

The word translated in many versions to “sensuality” is ἀσελγείαις (aselgeiais). Breaking down ἀσελγείαις, ἀ- is a prefix for not, negating the root, ελγείαις, which means mercy. Grammatically, the word is in dative case, an indirect object. So the correct translation of the Greek word is: to being without mercy. The verse more accurately reads:

And many will continue to their merciless acts through which the way of truth will be blasphemed.

Anyone who teaches without mercy brings in destructive heresies, thus maligning the truth that the Lord is a God of Mercy.

The problem with false teachings is that the people who bring them do not know they are false! They believe them so deeply that they are willing to die for them. But the truth is revealed when we do what Jesus did: Love with mercy.
